Baking Soda Volcanoes

Hebrews 4:2 For we also have had the gospel preached to us, just as they did; but the message they heard was of no value to them, because those who heard did not combine it with faith.

Baking Soda Volcanoes

Oh the classic baking soda volcano, the chemical reaction loved by millions of kids every year.  It is pretty basic really: you take a base (baking soda) and a few other ingredients and pour on the vinegar.  Doing so causes the eruption, the overflow that creates wide eyed giggling school-aged children and sometimes their fathers.

Here in Hebrews 4, the writer states that there are two key ingredients as well to the gospel coming alive in our lives.  It says that the gospel was preached (the baking soda), but it had no value because no one poured vinegar on it… er, I mean faith on it.   You get the point.  It seems that we need more than just the message; we need faith.  We need more than just knowing and believing in the Word; we need faith.  Faith then, is the chemical reaction that causes our walk with Christ to become real and alive and overflowing.  Just like the baking soda volcano.
