1 John 1:7 But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus, his Son, purifies us from all sin.
Oh my, today as we begin the book of first John, I noticed something. John is calling everybody a liar. Well, not really, but he sure is bold about the things he is saying. “If you do this and you don’t do that, you are a liar. If you say this and don’t live it, the truth is not in you. Etc, etc.” Read chapter 1 and chapter 2:1-14 and you will see what I am talking about. But through all that, I want to draw our attention to a key verse that I picked up on today.
In John 1:7, John writes that we are called to walk in the light. In other words, don’t walk in darkness. Don’t try so hard to keep stuff hidden and locked away deep inside. Allow the light of Christ to shine on it and set you free. You see, if we hold on to old garbage then our life starts to smell funny. Our tendency is to try and hide it so that know one will see it, no one will know, no one will find out. The problem with that is that you smell like a garbage dump. You might be able to hide the details of sin, but you still stink! You’ve got to get that junk out of there and let Jesus purify you. Verse 9 says: If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.
What are the things that we carry around and try to hide from God and from others? Are there secret sins in our life that we just couldn’t possibly face Jesus with? What better day than today – a sunshine filled fall day to bring those things into the light and let Him wash it all away. We can’t 10-step our way out of sin. We can’t hide it long enough that it will go away. We can’t keep lying to ourselves saying that someday I won’t struggle with this anymore. Instead it’s time to deal. Like the old hymn says: what can wash away my sins? Nothing…. but the blood of Jesus. Let His light shine on your life today and set you free so that you can truly walk in the light!
