Joshua 21:43-45 43 So the LORD gave Israel all the land he had sworn to give their forefathers, and they took possession of it and settled there. 44 The LORD gave them rest on every side, just as he had sworn to their forefathers. Not one of their enemies withstood them; the LORD handed all their enemies over to them.45 Not one of all the LORD’s good promises to the house of Israel failed; every one was fulfilled.
I love good days! The feeling you get on a good day is like nothing else. I don’t know how you would define your best day ever, but I am pretty sure mine would involve some sunshine. When you have a best day ever, everything seems to go your way. Traffic parts like the Red Sea. You find the shortest line at the grocery store. People do what they say they are going to do. Your boss sends you home early but still pays you for a full day’s work. Your kids behave as though Adam never sinned. Don’t you love those days?! If those days were everyday days, think about how great life would be. It would be the best life ever!
This is what I love about the end of Joshua 21. The Israelites had finally arrived. The Lord had given them all the land that He said He would. There was rest on all sides – no more war, no more strife. Just peace. It was a sigh of relief and a breath of fresh air. A 40 year journey had come to a close and the promised land was now a reality. What is most striking about this passage of scripture was not that they finally had the life they always dreamed of: a life of freedom. The most striking part is how they got there.
The way they got there was God fulfilling His promises. It says that not one of the Lord’s good promises failed; every one was fulfilled. Every one! They were not left high and dry. They were not the dude on the basketball court with his hand in the air waiting to be given hi-5 while all his teammates run down court, leaving him hanging and looking foolish. No, God did not leave them hanging. Every thing He said He would do, He did. And that is the God we serve. He can be counted on. His delivers on His promises. He never leaves us hanging. That’s why for me, living for Him is the best life ever.
